Student groups are always welcome at Shirley Plantation. A minimum of twenty (20) students is required to reserve a student program. Advanced reservations are required. Some programs subject to staffing availability.
All student group programs are customized based on the age and number of students participating as well as the length of time scheduled for visiting. Activities listed below may be adapted for students of all ages with some programs best suited to certain grade levels. These hands-on interactive programs complement the History and Social Science Standards of Learning (SOLs) for Virginia Public Schools. Educational Student Programs 2009-2010 Tour of the Great House: Take the guided tour of the Great House which includes stories of the Hill Carter family members who have lived at Shirley for 11 generations. (K-12). The Mighty James (River): Learn how the James River changed history beginning in 1607 and continues to be the one of the most influential rivers in America today. Hands-on activities include a "colonial shopping trip" and From Civil War to Civil Rights: Discover the connection between a famed Confederate general and a legendary Civil Rights leader during a walking tour. Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Martin Luther King, Jr. are two of the south’s most quoted men in history and they had more in common than you realize! (High School). Chicken Whisperer: Listen and learn from the chickens about eggs, nutrition, chicken defense, their history, personalities, pecking order, unique anatomy, and their fascinating daily life and social structure. (K-12). Stewards of the Land: Define what it means to be good stewards of land and compare the American ideals and economics of land stewardship through one family’s history of 11 generations to own and manage North America’s oldest family business. (High School). Student Group Admission Fees for School Year 2008-2009
*Complimentary admission provided for one teacher per ten students. One chaperone or teacher per ten students is recommended. Admission fees include Tour of the Great House, self-guided tour of the grounds, gardens, and outbuildings, with two activities. Additional programs may be reserved for a fee of $1.50 per student. Allow a minimum of two (2) hours plus additional time depending on the number of students and number or programs. Our staff can assist you with coordinating your time schedule. Group photograph taken by a trained Shirley staff member for just $15 provides you with one electronic and one printed version provided to the group leader. Photography use agreement included. Reservations required. Based on staff availability. Advanced reservations are required to be eligible for group discounts and programs. Program availability contingent on staff availability. Punctuality in arrival time is appreciated; late arrivals cannot be guaranteed their entire programs. Payment: One form of payment for the entire group is due on the day of the tour: cash, credit card (VISA or MasterCard), or check (company, personal, or travelers checks.)
